Projects
On Mondays, we go to the Boys & Girls Club to tutor various kids and help them finish their homework. On Fridays, the club holds fun activities which we monitor and sometimes participate in. Fun Fridays has always been a favorite with club members!
On Tuesdays, we go to the Kashi Yoga center where members of the Atlanta community get together and make bagged lunches for the homeless. Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are made quickly in a good-old-fashioned assembly line. Each bag gets a sandwich, juice, crackers or other treats, and a napkin. GT Circle K'ers like this project because it is relaxing and you can meet new, interesting people of the neighborhood.
On Wednesdays, we volunteer at the Atlanta Community Food Bank (ACFB), in the Product Rescue Center (PRC) where we unpack, inspect, sort, and repack donated food items. After going through the PRC, the donated food items are then sent to soup kitchens and other organizations that use the food items to provide meals for the homeless. The Food Bank offers a break (which volunteers greatly appreciate) in the middle of the project during which they provide snacks and drinks. This is a very popular project and many other Georgia Tech clubs also do service at the Food Bank.
On Thursdays, we go to Project Open Hand where we pack food trays that will be delivered to the elderly and disabled. The food trays are put onto a conveyor belt and volunteers, standing in a line down the belt, then take turns putting in pasta, bread, or whatever is on the menu. The food trays are then sealed and packed into boxes for delivery.
Usually after club meetings, we make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches which are then delivered to Crossroads Atlanta. This is a fun project to do after club meetings during which members can ask officers questions and everyone can chat.
After club meetings, we play a game to collect change for the Six Cents Intiative. One member "fines" the other members under a condition. All members who fall under that condition must throw their change and try to hit the Kiwanis bell (image above).
Some examples of fines:
"I fine anyone who is going to District Convention."
"I fine anyone who had three tests this week."
"I fine anyone who went to the football game last weekend."
On the weekends, we participated in a variety of projects, some of which we have found through Hands on Atlanta. However, we do have a few weekend projects that we go to more often than the others. These include MedShare, Trees Atlanta, Atlanta Community Toolbank, and Habitat for Humanity.
At MedShare, we sort donated medical equipment and repackage them for shipment to third world countries where supplies are needed.
At Trees Atlanta, we are given a broad range of tasks, from mulching to digging up older, dying trees so that new trees can be planted in their place.
At the Toolbank, we sort donated tool items or use the tools for various projects as instructed by the volunteer coordinator.
At Habitat for Humanity, we work on the constrution sites where our tasks include caulking, nailing the siding onto the house, and covering the roof.
